Sit and Knits can be as much of a bad influence as imaginary blog friends. One of the topics of last Tuesday's knitting conversation were Chamilia Italian charm bracelets. I didn't really plan on being one of "the gang"-not being much of a joiner- but the compulsive shopper got the best of me in the shop that they mentioned that I accidentally found. A little later I had this charm bracelet.
So far the charms on it are a bunny and an ice cream cone in honor of the two most exciting things that happened this summer. Coming soon in the mail (thanks ebay-another topic at the Sit and Knit) is an Empire State Building (where my husband proposed marriage) and a Buddha charm. So, as if I needed it, there's just a little more incentive to go to Tuesday's sit and knit.
Also on the Italia front- the thought of packing lunches once school starts. Last year I packed the same lunch every day. Salad in a bag, fake crabmeat, and whatever salad additions that struck my fancy for the week (baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, Greek olives, sunflower seeds, feta cheese, etc etc.) I lost 10 lbs by just ending my love affair with carb-ridden school lunches. I'm looking for variations on the above or thoughts on what healthy combinations of food you pack for lunch. I'm trying to stay away from salt-ridden-over processed foods.
Finally some Knitting Content-
Progress on the Tangled Yoke.
(I know there's some clever way to play with the words Tangled Yoke and Mangled Italian but it's not working for me right now)
I'm about 5 inches into it all and other than a slip here and there with the garter rib (done especially for you, Goddesses of Knitting), I'm getting a good vibe about it. The Jaeger Tweed is a dream with the KnitPicks Options. When concentrating, I can really speed along. When not concentrating, I can speed along and have several "do-overs."
and look... I just noticed... it matches the carpet! That will be GREAT when I have to ball it up and throw it on the floor because it doesn't fit!

It's good that you're planning ahead, you know, about the wadded mess matching the carpet...
I like pre-made hummus and pita bread (although if feta cheese is a delicacy where you are, I'm guessing pre-made hummus may not be readily available). Also good are pre-cooked chicken breast strips, which you can use in salad in place of crab meat. Or try tossing in some garbanzo beans--very high in protein, and tasty, too!
I LOVE your charm bracelet! I have an old fashioned one on a chain, silver charms, that is so big and heavy that I would sound like an entire tamborine band if I wore it! Yours is very interesting as it looks like the charms are on a more solid band bracelet...
Sorry, but I don't have any ideas for lunch. I struggle EVERY day to figure out something I will feel like eating later in the day, but it always takes me forever, and I usually have to stop at the grocery on the way for cut-up fruit from the salad bar cuz I don't have enough time or energy to do the peeling and cutting myself! The imitation crab meat sounds like a good idea, though!
Unfortunately, I do not have bagged lunch tastes, and would love a hot lunch or some fresh sushi at lunchtime, which I'm obviously not going to get!! :p
Oh, I forgot---I did find one good thing for lunch! I cut up cucumbers and roma tomatoes in chunks, then add garlic salt, pepper, olive oil and a nice, sweet balsamic vinegar I got at Costco. By lunchtime, well-seasoned and crunchy and tomato-ey good! (sorry to take up so much comment room, here...:)
I really like that charm bracelet. All the knitter out here are wearing the bracelets that resemble those old style stretchy watch bands. I don't care for them so have not joined to rush to buy them. But your charm bracelet is eyecatching and elegant.
Lunch is the main meal of our day at my office. My staff and I try to eat fairly healthy so we have lots of fresh vegetable and fruits. We also like cheese wraps and finger sandwiches.
On Fridays, rather than throw out all the left over vegatables, we throw them into a electric pot with chicken or beef stock and make vegatable soup. We tend to spurge on Fridays and buy a loaf of fresh baked French Bread with olive oil and balsalic vinegar. Since we started this type of lunch and cut out the fast foods, my staff and I have lost 35 pounds between us.
I like the color of the yoke. But I am glad you didn't lay ot on the carpet and take a picture.
OMG we're lunch twins! I have that very lunch with a balsamic vinegar spray dressing--I never get tired of fake crab meat. Sometimes I'll bring string cheese and reduced fat Triscuits as well...
Yeah, I like that bracelet too! I collect charms but I never wear them cause they jingle too much. I was on the no carb diet, and I did lose alot of weight but its so hard to always eat that way ALL the time. Now I try to stay away from white foods, potatoes, white bread, white rice, and eat whole foods. I also stopped all soda, just water and tea and coffee. One thing I did when I was losing weight was make lettace roll ups, stick the chicken or tuna inside a lettace leaf and use that as 'bread'. It's hard to eat healthy all the time, sugar tastes so darn GOOD!
Look here for some ideas, the Mr. Bento Flickr group:

June Oshiro (http://www.twosheep.com/blog/) wrote about her Mr. Bento lunchbox recently. If I had a Mr. Bento it might inspire me to make fun and healthy lunches.
OMG! I love that charm braclet. I really hate those other italian charm braclets with the little links you add. I think they look tacky but that one is really pretty and feminine.
I was stuck on asian chicken salads for lunch for awhile. Bagged lettuce, cooked chicken breast, a can of mandarin oranges and Newman's Own lowfat Asian dressing. Super yummy :o)
I've always been overly enamored of charm bracelets (WITH charm bracelets?). And that one is a REAL charm bracelet. Those weird metal watch band ones... I never understood the appeal. Where did you say you got it??
I also love the type of salad Stephanie described and the dressing she mentioned is my fave.
How about spinach, chicken, dried cherries (or cranberries), sliced almonds, and a poppy seed dressing?
knottyknitty's cucumber thing sounds good, too! I'd also add some mozzarella cubes at the last minute. But I'm cheesy that way.
I vote for the spinach, chx, cranberries, almond's and poppyseed dressing! That sounds wonderful.
I usually bring leftovers from dinner the night before. My faves are soup and pasta. I don't eat the school lunch because I'm not blessed with the wonderful cooks you guys have. We drool about your cafeteria food in our faculty lunchroom.
My fave lunch was chx salad I made from the canned chx, relish and mayo. I also liked adding hardboiled eggs to that. I'd mix up a bunch ahead of time.
I'd make homemade buns when I had time, they make anything taste good. I also enjoyed shredded BBQ Chx on sandwiches. It's like bbq pork, only healthier.
canned tuna instead of crab!
Being in NYC, I have so many healthy cheap lunch options that I don't bring lunch. I do bring breakfast (Fage greek yogurt with honey and a Luna or Lara bar). My favorite things to put on salad: chopped apples, walnuts and blue cheese (with honey mustard dressing) Very clever matching the carpet and sweater. My yarndar tells me this sweater will fit great!
Thank you for your particapation in my blog contest! It was actually Erci Clapton, and the famous couple was George and Barbara Bush!!!
Love the charm bracelet. My advice - drag the dh to Spamalot anyway. MP fan or not he will laugh his arse off.
Durn imaginary blog friends, now I will be thinking about charm bracelets all day...
lovely bracelet. as to lunch, i'm no help. i used to take a hot pocket for lunch each day. good luck!
I'm the worst (read laziest) about lunch. My office mate used to tease me when I'd suddenly bolt up at 3:30 screaming about dying of hunger. He'd always go, "Jeeeen? Why do you always wait so long to go eat?" I'd be first in line for the food pellets.
I went on a sushi diet once - mainly b/c I was eating way too many Baja Fresh burritos. I was lucky b/c there was a take-out sushi place across from my office. I do like making various wraps though - tortilla with various salady bits: lettuce, corn, black beans, etc. Corn and black beans are good b/c they're already cooked in the jars - they taste fine cold or cooked. Bob makes homemade salsa with tomatoes, onions, lemon juice and cilantro. Add Tobasco to taste. You could cook up some grilled salmon or tuna and toss it in with some avocado too. My fav.
