Every 4 vs. Every 4th as I understand it.
Decrease every 4th row means knit row 1 knit row 2 knit row 3 knit(4th) decrease row : Knit row 1 knit row 2 knit row 3 knit (4th)decrease row.
Decrease every 4 rows means knit row 1 knit row 2 knit row 3 knit row 4 knitdecrease row : knit row 1 knit row 2 knit row 3 knit row 4 knit decrease row. (knit 4 rows THEN decrease)
That's just my interpretation via KNQ-Debbie-it has always puzzled me-especially when knitting in the round. The rule is read EXACTLY what the pattern says then do it. (a future sidebar quote)
More knit night knowledge to share but de puppee kneeds attention.
note to Magatha and anyone else with turkish hat pix/ideas. Please send them along to blts At alltel (dot) net.
I can picture what he's talking about a little bit- I'm thinking 1950's "cool jazz" sort of thing but I may be mistaken.
Just for the record-I don't think husband realized what an unwoven end fashion statement he was making. We'll just keep it that way.
Thanks for the comments this torturous month of elementary music education except for maybe the one from Throws Like A Girl who should be severely scolded for her SAHM gloating during this music teaching time of year.

Hee! Sorry about that! :) If it's any consolation, I'll be going back once the kids are in school full time. And then probably teach until I die since I'm basically using up my retirement now. Happy Programming!
I was thinking about the decrease every 4th row vs. Decrease every 4 rows thing as I was knitting a sleeve last night. My pattern says decrease every 6th row (so row 6 is the decrease row). Incredibly, I was doing it correctly. Thanks for clearing this up. I have wondered but was afraid to ask anyone(there are no stupid questions, just stupid people. HA!)
I've been trying to remember whether I've ever seen the instruction, "decrease every four rows." I can't think of a time--usually it's every fourth row, or every sixth row. I'm still not convinced that there is a difference, but if I ever do run into that instruction, you can bet that I will worry myself into a useless spiral trying to decide how to execute it!
I totally agree the 4 vs. 4th can be confusing. When I confront this issue I try to envision what row is my right side row. Decreasing on the wrong side just doesn't seem right. Fortunately for my Ribby Sleeves I am decreasing correctly!
It's a bit like splitting hairs but not really b/c it makes a major difference to the knitted outcome.
I don't even remember seeing 4th vs 4 - which might explain a few UFO's gone wrong.
Puppee pix!
hang in there
Huh. So that is the difference. Like Yarnhog said, I will now worry myself into a total snit if I ever see the every 4 rows direction.
