knit night 433rd edition and a CONTEST!

Claire had my favorite line from knit night tonight.

"We should call this the Tuesday Night Rip Club"

Because I am knitting Olives afghan I have no counting or yarn overs or decreases to do and had time to think

A topic that occurred to me is Halloween Costumes.

It makes me want to have a contest.

I think the prize will be a $20 gift certificate to Scout's Swag. Cause I love me some swag.

To enter- tell me about your all-time favorite Halloween Costume.

One entry= if you post about it here.

OR skip the posting here and get two entries if you post it on your blog and put the link in the comments here. Add another entry if you put a picture of yourself in that costume on the blog.

I'll share some knit night favorite costumes and look around for a few pics of my own- just to keep the excitement building.

The contest will end on Friday October 31st- sometime that night. Plenty of time to find those old photos. The winner will be random. Happy October. Spread the word about the contest if you feel like it.

it was a boring costume... just a vampire, but my mom & step-dad dressed up, too. i was 16 or 17 and we walked down 3 or 4 houses and trick or treated at our neighbor's house, who were also family friends, and their oldest boy answered the door and didn't recognize us at all. it was fun, then!

A contest! The best Halloween costume was in 2005 (?) when me and Mr. Kim both dressed up as Anna Nicole Smith. This was before she died (and even before she had the baby), so the costume wasn't in completely poor taste. We used the family photo from Halloween (Liam was a skeleton. yawn) as our Christmas card. You bet your sweet bippy that I'm posting a photo of it on my blog.

My favorite was the year I dressed up as Pippi Longstocking (I was 12). I had long, red hair, and my mom straightened a wire hanger and wrapped it over my head, then braided my hair around it and bent it up so my braids stuck out about a foot to each side. I had a jumper and striped socks and big, lipstick freckles. I wore it to school on Halloween day--and everyone called me Pippi for the next two years.

i'm not sure what my favorite halloween costume for me was. i was a clown for many years because my dad did really cool face paint. in high school i used one of those huge pumpkin garbage bags as a halloween costume. that was easy but cute. in college, i made a geenie costume--too bad there aren't any photos of that one as i'll never be that thin again. oh well. my favorite for this year--john is going to be cookie monster so i'm making a chocolate chip cookie costume for norm!

The absolute best costume I had was my 6yo's first halloween. She was 6 months old at the time and oldest girl was almost 4. I dressed up as Cruella DeVil and both my girls dressed up as dalmations....I do have pics I just have to dig em out!! It will be fun trying to find them!!

I have never been creative with my costumes at Halloween. But last year my friend Anne had a a great one. She went as Janet Jackson- from the Superbowl wardrobe malfunction. She had the black outfit on and found some of those squishy stress balls that were shaped like breasts at a novelty store. She cut one and sewed it to the costume and had a big black wig and the little earpiece microphone. It was a great costume and EVERYONE knew who she was.

Monday night when I was out with my group all I was doing was casting on, knitting one row and then ripping. The third time I had to rip at the near end of the
1st row I just gave up. It's still shoved in the bottom of my knitting bag.

I'm not very creative, but I hang out with creative people. My favourite costume was a friend who came dressed up in a nice suit, with pages from books creatively attached all over the outfit.

He was, of course, a pageboy.

I never had a favorite costume as a kid because we all wore what everyone else was wearing, but as an adult, I had the most fun taking a big TV box, covering it with a plastic plaid tablecloth, and cutting a hole for my head. Added a paper plate cut in half to go round my neck and glued on some plastic flatware and a few plastic bugs and rats, and some pale makeup on me and I was a head on a plate. I sat outside on the sidewalk and talked to kids in a creepy voice as they came trick or treating..... too funny.

we grew up pretty poor so we definately made our costumes (and i loved it!) i went through a Box phase...one year a box of crayola crayons, the next the mox was modified and created into a large bag of jelly beans (we attached a large clear garbage bag(s) to the box top which i wore as a gat and the bags were stuffed with multi colored balloons. My fav i think though was the year i raided my grams big old black shiny boots and mom created a black tights and coat wire hanger mouse ears and sewed me a polka dot dress...instant mini mouse! i also remember having huge snow banks that year trick or treating and how slippery those boots were! My husband was a vampire every year, every year! Our daughter is still adjusting to the costumes having to be cool in hawaii to now making them warm for WA weather! such fun reading others answers!

Cool Contest! I love to dress up in general, because I like to sew and I'm a ham, but the first costume that came to mind was my Bee costume. My co-workers and I were a swarm one Halloween.

I've posted a photo and a link back to you on my blog.

p.s. I love your Babette.

Best costume ever had to be last year when I was a SIM.

Seriously, super easy- I used clear green folders to make a green 3-d plumbob to go over my head, put it on a headband, and that was it. Simple, but completely AWESOME.

Can it be my costume from this year? Because this year's is my all time favorite.

Last year I dressed my son in a very expensive Tom Arma frog costume. So far, by far, it's my fave costume.

Though, if you want to see some funny stuff, I dressed my mom's Great Dane in some costumes for a photo shoot:

And this year, I can't wait. I now have 2 boys, and my older boy (21 months old now) will be a monkey and the newborn (he's almost 16 weeks now) will be the banana. I'm so looking forward to Halloween!

I will have to hunt through my old photos to find a pic of it, but my favorite was the year I went as Raggedy Ann. I was 13 and made the costume all by my self. It won a 1st place prize at the local fall festival. I hope I find the photo because Deborah was a great gruesome witch that night.(Our mom did the awesome make-up,sewed the costumes & we were both that witch a lot over the years.)

Oh, maybe I need to change my favorite. Deborah & I we a little old man & a little old women when we were in Jr. High. I must also find that photo. People didn't want to give us candy because the really thought we were a litle old couple! That was great. I was the tall old lady & she was the short old man. Very funny.

Off to search for photos to post.....

Mrs. Beasely was my favorite costume. She's the doll from Family Affair - Buffy and Jodie and Sissy. I'm not sure how old you are but google it and you'll see.

thanks for the chance . . .

Well I always made costumes for the kids for halloween so I've got a couple favorites. One year my daughter was a slot machine (and a friend of ours did an adult size version and won first prize at several different radio station parties). When my oldest two were younger I made them punk rockers complete with ripped t-shirts and spray in hair dye.

My favorite costume was when I was in Middle School and I was the spirit of autumn. I made myself a leaf crown and wand, and had a costume made of the colors of Autumn. It was amazing.

By the way, I'm mentioning your contest on my blog, www.garnfiti.blogspot.com

My favorite costume...oh about 60 pounds ago. Oops. I was a red devil. I had red pvc pants and top and some horns! I was also newly single so I had great time just like I was just let out of prison that night.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of devils....I once went to a costume party where everyone wore some elaboate outfit. One girl had on only a nice velvet dress and a small pair of horns.....I asked who she was portraying...and she said...I am the "Devil with the Blue Dress On" I thought that was the cleverest thing ever!!!

When I was in third grade (and this is getting in the Wayback Machine and going back to the 1960s) I had a witch costume that I thought was the coolest thing ever. It had an iridescent green skirt and a plastic mask of an ugly hag with warts, complete with sharp edges. Hey, it was the 60's, way before toy safety--I even had a fake guillotine toy--don't ask. I'm sure photos were taken but I have no clue where they'd be. Fun contest, though--I'll let my blog readers know about it!

One costume I can remember is when I dressed up as a princess. Living in WI, its always freezing cold in WI. So I had to wear my winter coat to trick or treat. Thankfully my winter coat had all these jewels over it so it sorta went with the whole princess thing.

A couple of years ago, on Halloween night,my poor dh was working on his truck in the front drive. Let's just say the words that gushed forth weren't 'childproof'! I ran into the house and grabbed a flowery-straw hat, some little American flags, a cane and an old dress. After pulling it together a bit, I grabbed a plastic pumpkin filled with treats--and paraded up and down the street hollering "I'M UNCLE SAM'S GRANDMA!"

--My DH laughed and I saved some innocent ears! I hope.

It may not be my best costume ever, but I've posted a pic on my blog of one of the harder to guess costumes. Every year one group of friends would get together with costumes based on common words or phrases. In this photo I'm a "veiled threat".

My favourite was a frog costume that a friend of my dad's made for him when he was in his 20s. It was just a shirt and a mask, so I was big enough to wear it by the time I was about 10 - and I did for a few years in a row, until I decided I was too old for costumes. We still have it. Maybe someday one of us will use it again.

My 2 favorite costumes were at the same party - one because it was so lame and the other because he borrowed my dad's sweater -
The first one, my friend worked at HomeDepot and wasn't planning on going till the last minute, so he grabbed some large clear plastic, wrapped it around himself and then had to attach a sign labling himself as..."The invisible man"
The second one was a Mr. Rogers cosstume - the blue sweater, slacks and 2 pairs of shoes, complete with a bell-ringing "train" attached to a mug so he could carry it around and call it up to go on whatever "adventures" were needed that night!

My favorite outfit doesn't have a picture(I don't have one and I'm not sure if anyone took one). Background: I worked at a casino right after college for about 8 months. Only one co-worker knew me from before I worked there. At work we all wore long sleeved, high collared purple shirts. And I didn't really show my true colors... so one of the co-workers threw a party for halloween... so i asked my 14 year old brother what i should be for the party. He immediately says, "A dominatrix!" What?! How do you even know that at 14???? so i did. Short black skirt, fishnet stockings, high butt kicking boots with studs up the side, fake leather(plastic) corset top, and hair and make up done to the nine's... and I had a whip(borrowed from a friend)!! the party was in the basement... I walked into the basement and there was DEAD SILENT!! yea, shocked the hell out of every single person there... That was 7 years ago and I still to this day(literally) hear about it from all the guys, cuz I play fantasy football with them!! They just brought it up yesterday!! YIKES! some things you never live down... but I don't mind!

OK, my pics are up on my blog, along with why this is my favorite costume ever. I had to figure out this year what to do with a newborn! So since I "wear" my babies all the time, I thought a kangaroo is a natural choice! It's complete with a real live joey in the pouch! Here are the pics.

I was Rosie the Riveter! It was a pretty big hit at the party I went to. Lots of people needed help with figuring it out - show them the arm muscle and they knew immediately what it was.
